A place to keep my work.
8 hours it took me
Published on November 12, 2016 By Uvah In Personal Computing

While organizing files and stuff, clearing space on my hard drive and sending some stuff to my backup HD, my system began to slow down to nearly a crawl. I thought perhaps it was ASC as I recently upgraded to the latest version. Turns out that was not the case. Opening explorer became a pain, almost a full minute to open. So...long story longer...I did a system restore from a backup system image. An hour goes by. System restore completes and restarts...and restarts again after claiming it had encountered a problem and needs to restart. Caught in a loop I was beside myself. What I gonna do now? So I went searching for my USB where I put a backup of Win 10. Did a clean install and got my lappy back up and running. What surprised me was that ninety percent, or thereabouts, of my files and folders were left intact but my apps were all uninstalled. First up...WindowBlinds and Start10, which by the way, updated themselves, Cool. I like that. After the clean install several programs, one of which was AVG, were updated during the latest batch of updates from MS. The ones that were updated I had no problem with, they reinstalled nicely. When I tried to reinstall AVG though it said my installer package was outdated and I should download the latest version. Ok...done that. AVG 2016 Zen! is the newest version, it sucks! So I 86'd it and went with Avast. Then I updated Malwarebytes. Ran a scan and it found six pups on my system. Avast did not catch them. Never had that problem with AVG. I couldn't find a version of AVG that is not a 'Zen". Oh well...back to work.

OH...BTW. I have decided to go with Adobe's Creative Cloud thingy. Latest version of Photoshop 2017, 20 gigs of free storage and did I mention the latest version of PSCC. All for twenty bucks a month. I can do twenty bucks a month. I'm gonna do twenty bucks a month. I love my Photoshop.

$20 a month sounds ok.  $240 a year, eh, not so much.  $1,200 over 5 years, no thanks.  Gotta watch those easy monthly payments.

In case you're interested, Amazon is having its annual sale on the new release of Photoshop Elements, $40.  It's been on sale for about a month, looks like they're out of stock right now but you can still order it.

Well...I did find AVG 2016 free edition, no Zen over at Filehippo. See...I don't mind the 20 every month and I did PS Elements when it was a freebie, version 5. Didn't like it too much. Did Illustrator too and it was meh. I prefer Photoshop because it does both vector and raster images. Now that I got CC 2017 learning to use it is a no brainer. Had plenty of experience with CS6, two trials worth. Besides...building Xion skins in Photoshop is crazy. I get carried away all the time. Best is I can learn how to use the animation and 3D functions. What I need to do is upgrade the memory to its max of 8 gigs with an SSD of about 500 gigs. Cheaper than buying a new one ATM. Next one will be a desktop and I'll keep the laptop for uh....stupid stuff.

with an SSD

I do love SSD's.  First time I booted up with one of those I think I became a bit excited

$20 bucks a month is ridiculous. Monthly payments for products is nothing less than paying rent. I personally refuse to pay rent. I admit, I paid a high price for all my graphics software, but at least I can claim ownership including all the benefits that that entails , and I'm not held hostage every month. Just sayin'....

I appreciate the input Ace. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to afford buying PS outright, fixed income and all that. At least this way I can keep using PS and get all the upgrades down the line. Beats the hell out of a blank.

Thanks for the feedback. Ultimately its all a matter of personal preference. I've used Gimp and Paint.Net. Both are excellent programs but pale in comparison. When your're used to the 'good stuff' as it were, you tend to stay with it. I'm staying with Photoshop simply because I happen to love the program. If I could afford PS outright I'd do it in a heart beat.
