Stops working when trying to update
Published on May 20, 2014 By Uvah In Personal Computing

Went to MalwareBytes website and read some of the forum posts. No help there. Uninstalled Mbam and downloaded a new one for a clean install. After the uninstall using ASC's uninstaller which takes out left over files did a reboot and installed Mbam. Ran it and the same thing happened. Back to the website where another post says to delete rules.ref. So I did that and tried again to run Mbam. No help there either. Did three online scans with TrendMicro, Kaspersky and Bit Defender and all came up clean. The problem started after using ADWcleaner dl'd from Major Geeks. I think it took out some files it wasn't supposed to. Any ideas?

To confirm your thought, uninstall the ADWCleaner via CCleaner and clean the registry as well.

Reboot, and reinstall Malwarebytes. Then see if it works...

Have you tried going back using system restore?

 or

sfc /scannow

That was the first thing I did, get rid of ADWCleaner through CCleaner and I did do a system restore. Neither one worked. Another post on the website said Mocrosoft Security Essentials should be uninstalled saying it is the culprit. I don't see how as they both worked fine together up until now. But just to see if that was true I uninstalled MSE, rebooted and tried Mbam again. MSe is not the culprit. Mbam still stops working when I try to update. It even quits during a scan.

Malewarebytes won't run or won't update?

It won't do either one. Another thing I noticed with regards to dialogue boxes. I get this weird two tone blue where it used to be skinned. Not all of them though. This too happened after I ran ADW.

Ross, get MalwareBytes Chameleon. It'll run a cmd prompt, kill anything that's keeping MalwareBytes from installing/running, then it'll install malwarebytes for you, and clean the system.

I just had this same problem on my brother's rig, which was full of malware. He had MWB installed, it wouldn't run. MalwareBytes Chameleon fixed it.

Thanks Jim. Gonna run it now. Ran it, it downloaded another mbam, did not install it. Rebooted as it suggested and installed it myself. It did not work. MalwareBytes still will not run.

Hi Uvah I am experiencing the exact same problem already did the same as you verbatim. I don't have adwcleaner so it can't be that I can't figure this one out every time I try to update it just stops responding every single time. I've uninstalled 3 times now and reinstalled and I used Ccleaner every time still to no avail i'am at a loss!! I have also run chameleon as redneckdude said in his reply did not fix mine I have run multiple scans even from safe mode nothing found!! the darn thing just won't run it has to be a conflict somewhere I guess!

I even went to system repair that took it back to a further restore point. No luck. Even Chameleon didn't work. I are stumped.

Ditto on that completely stumped I was going to try sys repair but since it did not work for you no sense in trying that.

Uvah:

Go to your command prompt>Run as Administrator> type in chkdsk /f /r  (space between chkdsk and /f and space between /f and /r).

This will have a 5 step operation. You'll have to reboot for it to start. It'll take some time, so do something while it's doing its thing. It will reair ALL files, etc. That are problematic.

When it's done, it'll reboot into Windows. Hopefully, your problems will have been solved. If not, you may have to do a restore from a backup or a prior point.

DrJBHL

Uhhh......nope. I let it do its thing. It finished and rebooted and I just tried to run mbam again and no go. I got a little desperate earlier and tried to restore it to factory specs. To my utter dismay, on my Toshiba......the recovery partition is missing. WTF!
